Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui secara rinci latar belakang mahasiswa Program Studi Bahasa Inggris Tahun Akademik 2013/2014. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk menemukan jawaban dari penelitian ini adalah kuesioner, tes tertulis PMB, dan tes tertulis pre-test dan post-test matrikulasi. Pengolahan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif, Analisis korelasional, dan Analisis variansi. Dari kuesioner latar belakang mahasiswa terjabarkan  bahwa mahasiswa bahasa Inggris IKIP PGRI Pontianak terdiri dari latar belakang demografis yang berbeda-beda, begitu juga dengan latar belakang pendidikan orang tua, pendapatan orang tua, serta sumber belajar yang mereka miliki. Terhadap kemampuan berbahasa inggris awal mereka sebelum dan sesudah matrikulasi dapat diasumsikan kualitas pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di antara kab/kota juga beragam. Akibatnya  pengetahuan awal mereka dalam bahasa Ingggrispun cukup beragam. Dari hasil keseluruhan latar belakang akademik mahasiswa dengan nilai akademik mereka menunjukkan korelasi yang signifikan. Kemudian dari hasil pre-test dan post-test matrikulasi mahasiswa menunjukkan bahwa program matrikulasi efektif untuk meningkatkan kinerja mahasiswa.
