KRITERIA DAN BENTUK BUKU TEKS SAINS MASA DEPAN

Keberhasilan pendidikan sains turut ditentukan oleh pemilihan dan penggunaan buku teks dalam kelas. Pemilihan buku teks sains seharusnya didasarkan atas keriteria-kriteria yang mencakup faktor: (1) Isi dan organisasi materi ajar; (2) Pengembangan tujuan-tujuan non isi; (3) Aktivitas eksperimen, demonstrasi, dan keterampilan proses sains; (4) Ciri/tampilan mekanis; dan (5) Pengarang. Budaya textbook-centered dalam pengembangan sains harus diubah, karena pemahaman konsep-konsep sains tidak dapat dikembangkan melalui pembelajaran berpusat pada buku teks. Para ahli memberikan saran yang beragam terhadap buku teks sains masa depan. Salah satunya adalah buku teks masa depan seharusnya memakai peran sebagai alat yang penting (an esential tool) untuk pengembangan produk sains (logical plane), penerapan dan pengkaitan produk sains dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, masyarakat dan teknologi (evidential plane), dan pengembangan konsep sains agar mudah dipahami, masuk akal, dan berguna bagi siswa pada jenjang sekolah tertentu (psychological plane).
